Cloud & AWS

A cloud bill that can be explained line by line

Attribution first, then waste, then rightsizing, then commitments — in that order.

The problem

Spend is rising faster than usage and nobody can say which team, product or customer it belongs to. Every cost conversation stalls at the first question.

Approach

How we would approach it

01

Read the Cost and Usage Report against the architecture, not the console summary

02

Apply and enforce a tagging standard so untagged resources cannot be created

03

Remove orphaned and idle resources, mapped to an owner before anything is deleted

04

Schedule non-production, then rightsize from measured utilisation including peaks

05

Model commitments against the cleaned baseline, never before it

Measures

What we would measure

Agreed at the start, reported against honestly. If a measure is not worth arguing about now, it is not worth reporting later.

  • Share of spend attributable to an owner
  • Cost per unit of work, not total cost
  • Non-production hours running
  • Anomalies caught within a week

Capabilities involved

What usually goes wrong

Buying Savings Plans before rightsizing locks the oversizing in for one to three years and makes it harder to fix, not easier.
