How long does custom software take to build?
It depends on scope, but the useful answer is that scope and trade-offs are written down before engineering starts, and delivery runs in short cycles against a working environment so progress is visible rather than reported. A first usable version is the target, not a complete system on the last day.
What happens after the software is delivered?
Maintenance, support and upgrades continue after launch, along with the monitoring and documentation that let a team other than the original authors operate the system. Handover is part of the engagement rather than a separate negotiation.
